You know the commandments

The rich young man went away sorrowful, because the commitment Jesus asked of him was too much. But it is no more than the first commandment, to love the Lord your God with all, and that is who he is. He promises that this utter faith in him (such as renounces your own self, for this is the nature of true Christian faith) will receive eternal life, for he is good. This is the faith you were given in Baptism; it is of a piece with the new man in you, which arises from the font, while the old man in you continues to die. Sermon for Trinity VI midweek: St Matthew 19
